3. Gold Rush

<Gold Rush> is an AR service that encourages people to dispose recyclable waste correctly or to up-cycle them.
The ultimate goal of the service is to let people experience ‘Resource circulation’, which means that waste is not simply used once and discarded to cause environmental pollution, but is returned to us as a valuable resource through reusing or up-cycling.
Let's go with <Gold Rush> and turn the overflowing garbage into gold.

Project Goal

The ultimate goal of Gold Rush is to let people experience 'resource circulation' as if they were playing a fun game, so that eventually make them feel the importance of these actions.
Well-disposed garbage can be a valuable material for making something again, not just for being thrown away.

Application UI

Home & Assistant characters

When you run the application, you have two choices. The first is to clean and separate recyclable waste well and send it to the upcycling company, and the second is to make upcycling goods by yourself with trash. Then, the following two characters will assist you.

2 main flows of the service

First, users can correctly separate recyclable waste with the characters featured in the service, and experience this process as if they had become a gold miner. When garbage is properly cleaned and separated, gold ore can be obtained and some recyclable waste can be sent to upcycling companies that need it. Users can convert it into gold and use it as a point, which can be used to purchase upcycled goods, or to donate to environmental organizations.

Second, users can get recommendations for things to upcycle themselves and a guide on how to make them. Also, they can earn points by selling their own upcycled works to other users. These two courses will be joined by polar bear miners and seal alchemist characters, which are representative animals endangered by environmental pollution. This service recognizes the material of the recyclable waste by camera, and we did prototyping using the AR building tool, Reality Composer.

Characters

There are two characters who are both avatars and assistants for service users. They all collect gold by mining or compounding ores. These two are polar bear and seal, and they’re representative animals that are endangered due to environmental pollution.

Polar bear miner mines gold ore from recycled waste. She assists people to separate recycled waste correctly. The miner appears when you recognize recyclable waste that they want to send to upcycling campanies. Done mining, gold ore comes out.

The seal alchemist makes gold with the gold ores that the miner brought. He is a character that encourages users to do self-up-cycling. The alchemist gives you gold after completing self-upcycling. Or he synthesizes gold ore from the miner.

UI Concept

We adopted gamification. We applied various motions of the game concept to make the user feel rewarded by recommending the right item and clearing the game’s mission for each step.

User Scenario

We made service user scenario that users properly clean and separate recyclable waste and send it to an upcycling company or create their own up-cycled product.
The first thing to do in order to reuse recyclable waste is to throw it away correctly. But it's a very cumbersome process. For example, when we throw away a plastic bottle, we must firstly empty and wash out the remnant in the bottle, and separate the vinyl label and bottle cap. This hassle causes problems with poor recycling.
So we’re going to start by making users to properly clean and seperate recyclable waste, with this process feel like they're playing a fun game.

Stakeholders

Service stakeholders are garbage dumpers, namely service users and upcycling companies that make products with recycled waste.
Users receive gold when they send trash to the company, and can purchase upcycled products with it.
Or, users can sell and purchase their own upcycle products.

Application Wireframe

Based on these scenarios, we came up with an application flow. A guide to garbage separation is provided, and once clean garbage is recognized, users can choose one of two options.
The first is to send cleanly separated garbage to an upcycling company, and the second is to make your own upcycled items.
