About a Course

Mixed Reality technology combines Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality to create new environments and visualizations, transforming how we experience the world. It starts to spread around our everyday lives. We are connected now more than ever using XR enabled products and services such as Hololens and AR applications by using 3d interfaces and interactions. Interfaces of a product and interactions will constantly evolve as technology advances, and producing the best design solution, or the right vision will always be an interesting challenge.

Virtual Interaction Convergence is about design, behavior, and people’s understanding of physical, digital, and hybrid environments, with a specific focus on a new way of interactions in 3d interfaces.  This course aims to introduce students to ways of thinking about XR technology will and has impacted humans and how we can design intelligent experiences that are usable and beneficial to humans and respect social, cultural environments.

Students will be exploring and discovering digital and physical mixed environments, space, and interaction in eXtended Reality (XR), and developing various and future-oriented interface design concepts such as product/mobility/spatial. Furthermore, visualize the experience to draw results into a design project. This course will approach interaction design from the perspective of Human Centered Design and students will learn ways to apply computational design in creative context.

Course Structure
During the course, you will come across many examples and case studies from spatial and holographic interface and interaction design. This syllabus will be updated over the course of the semester. But the basic plan is that we will cover two phases, each of the phases will result in a project.

Phase 1. Design an AR interface/interaction that impacts social good.
Look around you – on campus, neighborhoods, online, anywhere and observing the ways people are using things (not just technology, but social and cultural trends, behavior, interaction) and discover a problem/issue that you want to tackle.  Apply AR technology to solve your problems in the high impact realms of health & wellness, cities & natures in emerging markets and beyond, all broadly understood.

Phase 2. Design an MR experience that enhances to ___________.
Ex) Design an MR experience that helps to organise and play music together.

Observing your friends, family or partner and trying to get an insight how they are dealing with life (living/working/relationship – What they need? What are they struggling with? Find hidden patterns, behaviors that they might not notice by themselves). How your design can help them to make better Home, Work and On the go (Mobile) experience.
